Description

The Tanami Track goes through the Tanami Desert and is a shortcut  between the Kimberly Region and Alice Springs instead going all the way along the Victoria Highway and Stuart Highway via Katherine.

The Track can be used with a well-prepared 2WD driven with care. Like all Gravel Roads, the track can be impassable or very hard to go after rainfall. Because of the Tanami Mines north west of Alice Springs the track is usually well graded in the Northern Territory but may be rough in Western Australia.

There are only a very few places of interest along the Tanami Track. The Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater in Western Australia can be reached via an about 25 km long trip from the track. Another point of interest are the Tanami and Granites Gold Mines, but there's no public access. Otherwise there is a lot of landscape with spinifex, numerous termite hills and some ridges.

The distances are enormous. It is strongly recommended to bring enough petrol and drinking water with you. There are only a very few possibilities to fill them up. Rabbit Flat Roadhouse is open from Friday to Monday only, so that the longest stretch without fuel can be nearly 900 km.

I did the Tanami Track in April 2005 and needed for two and a half days. The Track was well maintained and easy to drive (4WD). There are only a few good spots to stay overnight. Some of them are to be found between the border und the Tanami Goldmines on both sides of the track. I spent another night at Tilmouth Wells Roadhouse. The management and staff at Tilmouth Wells Roadhouse is very friendly, the food is very good and there's also a small pool you can use for cooling down after a day with sand and dust.
